Interview with Pete Best

Pete _best _drive

What's your favourite Beatles song?

"Out of all of them I'd have to say 'I Saw Her Standing There'. It reminds me of our sound and my time with The Beatles.

Do you still keep in touch with Paul and Ringo?

Unfortunately not, but the door is always open!

If you could have been in any other band from the start which would it be?

I was in another band. They were called the Blackjacks and they were great!

Do you still have friends from the Hamburg days?

I keep in touch with everyone from the Hamburg days! All of them: Horst, Astrid, Klauss, Tony, Rosa. All of them.

Can you play any other instruments?

I play the guitar… badly!

Is it true you were considered the best-looking Beatle?

Well that's what some say, but it's not for me to say!

What are your plans for the Casbah Coffee Club?

That's really something you'd have to ask my brother Roag. He's the captain of that ship!

  1. Brian Kingsley  05 October 2012 at 13:56:27

My younger brother was just telling me about the Blackjacks yesterday. He's 50, I'm 55 (will be in November). I think he knows more about Pete than he does any of the Beatles. He was quoting tracks from the Anthology album, telling me some nice info about Pete's mum Mona, etc, etc, etc. We're both huge fans. Would love to see an in-depth video interview with Pete.

  2. Sloppy Tomson  13 October 2012 at 18:10:29

Hello, Pete! I played drums at the Cavern Club last week! Sat in your spot on the stage, and played pretty well. What a great time!

Question: What is or was The Atom Beat? (In the USA, we never heard that term, back in the day.) Most drummers here believe it involves playing the kick drum forcefully on all four beast of each bar. Is that true? Is there more to it?

Hard to judge by your old recordings. They did not record drums well, back in that day. Cheers! Please let me know. Sloppy, USA

  3. Ian Warren  16 October 2012 at 05:27:53

I only wish I had your talent. A life isn't defined by what you nearly was but by what and who you are. I'm guessing I'm not the only person that logs in here because you are you and we love you, man. You rock! I've heard you play live and you are great, it was an honour. I didn't enter the photo competition cos to me your face shouldn't be anywhere else but on your shoulders. They are capable shoulders.
    @ianwarren1971 Peace. Out.

    Hello, Pete!

I've always been intrigued with the paintings and murals you and the guys did when decorating the Casbah. What was it?... A rainbow, spider's web, stars, silhouette, Aztec stuff... and a beetle? Was the beetle painted before you guys came up with the name "Beatles"? Also, can you share more about the paintings and the inspiration behind picking these themes? All very esoteric if you know what I mean? Fascinating.

I own a Rosetti Solid 7 guitar, same specs as the one played by Paul McCartney during The Beatles first trip to Hamburg in 1960. How could I send a photo to Mr. Best??

Thanks in advance and best wishes...

  19. Paul Nicosia  07 March 2015 at 18:16:16

    Hi Pete,
Tipping Points....I have always been interested in tipping points because it's the small that change that makes a difference between a prince and a pauper, success or the lack of it. In my opinion, you can not compare the Beatles to anything happening in music today. It's like comparing apples to oranges. About a year ago Katty Perry said, in an interview with Paul McCartney on the Graham Norton show,(when comparing the number of # 1 hit singles and discovered that Paul had 24), "I've already had 10 and I've only been going for 5 years" . Katty had mistakenly believed that she could compare her success to Paul's. She can not because that was a different time and place. The impact of the Beatles on the lives of people in the western world was significant. To find something comparable today you would have to leave the music world and look at technology. I would argue that The Beatles where as significant then as the introduction of the internet is now or perhaps TV before. Maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but it is of that magnitude.
Katty cannot compare herself to the Beatles or (here is my point) can anyone compare to your part of the story. Many years from now she MAY be recalled as 'one of' in a long list of successful female singers with a comma before and after her name.

We just can not evaluate events in our own time because we're too close to it. Pete, even though you may not like your part of the story, your name will be ever remembered and recalled more than today's ( and tomorrow's) stars. You were the only drummer during the significant part of the story. Those 2 years were the making of the Beatles. Hamburg was the tipping point, in my opinion. Can you imagine bands playing for 8 hours a day 6 days a week now? It won't happen because the world has changed. The Beatles can not happen again.

  20. Ricardo Cornejo  11 March 2015 at 13:47:15

HI Pete , just want to say that you are the luckiest guy in the world, i cant imagine how it was to be young and have a band in those days wher it all began. John said that those were the best shows he did. I frequently play the Decca demo in my car and in my home, and sing "take good care of my baby" to my daughter. I saw you in Chile at Mario´s Club. I hope someday I will go to Liverpool, sure i´ll go to meet the Casbah. Regards from Chile.
